Have a new puppy? Congratulations! Those little furry creatures sure have a way of stealing the hearts of everyone around them. Puppies are cute and cuddly, but they also come with a list of responsibilities for the owner. The first year of life for a puppy is an exciting one, and they are learning so much. Good puppy owners know the key to a confident and well behaved older dog is a positive puppy experience, full of play, praise, and boundaries.
One of the first hurdles all puppy owners must cross is the dreaded potty training process. It can be messy. It can be frustrating. It can be exhausting. But, potty training is the first big challenge you and your puppy face together. Here are a few tips to make it easier for both of you.
Keep Your Puppy Close
You won’t know your puppy’s potty signs unless you are nearby to notice. During the potty training process, don’t let your pup out of your sight. Stay close so that you can notice signs that could indicate the need to head outside.
Head Outside Often
You should take your pup outside often so they have a better chance of going potty outside than inside. Keep your pup on a leash, even in the backyard, so that you can notice when they go to the bathroom.
Praise, Praise, Praise
Puppies want your love and attention, and you communicate those through lots of praise and petting. When your pup goes to the bathroom outside, give him lots of love and praise. He will notice that what he did made you happy, and he will be more likely to do it again in the future.
Even the most expert puppy potty trainers can expect accidents to happen. When it does happen, don’t overly punish your dog, as they may not realize what happened even moments before. Instead, try to get it right the next time.
